The Cure, fronted by the singular and iconic Robert Smith, has been a major influence on alternative rock, goth rock, and new wave.
Formed in 1976, the band’s sound was originally dark and cryptic. “Boys Don’t Cry” was The Cure’s breakout song in ’79, followed by “Let’s Go to Bed” in 1982. Three years later, the band’s growing impact, internationally and in the U.S., was exemplified by the popularity of songs “In Between Days” and “Close to Me.”
1987 was The Cure’s major breakout year, bringing more pop sensibility to its overall sound. It released what would become one of the band’s most popular albums, “Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me,” its seventh and the first album to break into the Billboard Top 40, featuring the songs “Why Can’t I Be You?” and “Just Like Heaven.”
The followup, ’89′s “Disintegration,” another favorite with fans, included the top 10 single “Lovesong.”
The band’s next hit song, “Friday I’m in Love,” was released in 1994.
The band’s last studio album was 2008′s “4:13 Dream.” The Cure was nominated, but not inducted into, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.
