Hawaii Youth Symphony’s top orchestra, Youth Symphony I (YSI), will perform with the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra (HSO) at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Thursday November 2 at 7:30 pm.

The 2017-2018 edition of YSI is composed of 103 of Hawaii’s top high school students, grades 9-12, representing 23 public, home, and independent schools on Oahu and Maui. These students were selected for the orchestra through competitive, blind auditions held last May, and rehearse once a week from August-April.

Joseph Stepec, the current music director of the UH Mānoa Symphony Orchestra (UHSO) at The University of Hawai‘i, will conduct this concert. The side-by-side group will perform Dmitri Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Op. 96, John Corigliano’s Mannheim Rocket, John Williams’ Yoda’s Theme from Star Wars and Jean Sibelius’ Finale from Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 43.

Tickets: Tickets are general admission, $20 for adults and $10 for students, and are available online, at the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra Box Office, 3610 Waialae Avenue, or by calling 94-MUSIC (946-8742).

Who’s Bad – The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience@ Concert Hall

Who’s Bad – The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience
November 3-4, 2017

Who’s Bad – a power-packed tribute to Michael Jackson has ignited crowds on every continent and can only be described as a jaw-dropping, musical must-see. This is the first concert of the year for HSO’s musicthatROCKS series.

Join the HSO for a music and dance experience unlike any other as we present Who’s Bad, The Ultimate Michael Jackson Experience.

As the longest-running Michael Jackson tribute band, and the only one to predate his untimely passing, Who’s Bad has sold out nearly 50 venues in the United Kingdom including London’s O2 where the King of Pop was slated to end his career with a 50-show “This Is It” concert series.

The velvety vocals and pinpoint choreography of frontman James Times combined with the five-piece band’s blaring horns, down-deep rhythms and the dancer’s synchronized dance routines results in a performance delivered with soul and precision superseded by no one but the King himself. They’ve shared stages with the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, The Backstreet Boys, The Four Tops, Boys II Men, and hip hop superstar, Pitbull. Captivated fans include LIVENATION’s Anthony Nicolaidis who calls Who’s Bad, “the real deal,” and Michael Jackson’s longtime friend and manager Frank DiLeo who proclaimed after Who’s Bad show in Nashville, TN, “the show was great….Michael would have been proud!”

Whether you idolized the Jackson 5, fell in love to Human Nature, or learned to moonwalk to Billie Jean, Who’s Bad is THE ULTIMATE music-and-dance driven Michael Jackson homage.

Excited for this high-energy concert, HSO Executive Director Jonathan Parrish says, “musicthatROCKS is part of our ongoing effort to broaden our audience by taking advantage of the amazing versatility of the HSO musicians, many of whom grew up listening to the King of Pop.”
